The AI boom is driving a massive push to build datacentres, with tech giants spending an estimated $765 billion this year on AI datacentre infrastructure. This is a stark reversal from their previous efforts to cut carbon emissions. Microsoft's emissions, for instance, appeared to have flatlined at 16m metric tonnes in 2023 and 2024, but have now increased by 25% to 20m metric tonnes. Google's emissions rose by 18%, and Amazon's by 16%, with supply chain emissions, including datacentre building and construction, playing a significant role.

The Uptime Institute estimates that big datacentre projects announced last year would consume 1.3% of the world's electricity usage, a near-doubling of current demand. This surge in power demand is particularly concerning, with US projects expected to account for the majority of this increase. The availability of carbon credits to offset emissions is also a concern, with Shaolei Ren suggesting a possible lack of credit supply in the carbon market to meet the technology companies' needs.

The future of datacentre construction is promising, with JLL predicting the construction of about 1,200 datacentres globally between now and 2030, driven overwhelmingly by AI demand. This boom raises important questions about the environmental sustainability of AI and the role of cloud computing in exacerbating carbon emissions. As the world grapples with the implications of this technological revolution, it is crucial to consider the long-term environmental consequences of these companies' actions.
